Climate change, man-made, is happening now, not just a threat in the future. Governments, industry and individuals are taking action to mitigate the effects of CO2 and methane emissions and deforestation, but it could be too little, too late. Elected governments, in particular, are cautious about stronger action as they fear their voters aren’t fully supportive of the necessary changes, but the sooner action is taken, the lower the final costs will be.
Nonetheless, much is being done, and some trends are in the ‘right’ direction (see e.g. Richie,H: Not the End of the World, 2024, e-book: 9780316536950).
In this environment, many young people are anxious, and in some cases almost paralysed by worry, uncertainty about what if anything they might do to help, and even despair that ‘it’s all too late’.
The ‘climate events’ we hope to run in the future are intended to address these concerns, by informing young people in particular of what is already happening in technological, environmental and political spheres, engaging them in courses and organisations that are working to ameliorate our effects on climate, and to encourage them to participate in activities that can contribute but which also might help generate energy and hope.
