The School of Languages, Cultures and Societies, Leeds University is to hold ISOCTAL-4. The invited plenary speakers are Professor Zhao Yang (Peking University, China), Professor He Lin (Wuhan University, China), Professor Boping Yuan (Cambridge University, UK), Professor George Zhang (Richmond American University, UK), Professor Wang Jun (Shanghai JiaoTong University, China), and Mr David Su Liqun from Meridian Chinese Studies, UK. Presentations will be delivered either online or in person, but all will be live streamed.
The conference organisers are inviting abstract submissions for talks on any topics in Chinese theoretical and applied linguistics – understood broadly as covering all Sinitic languages, e.g. Mandarin, Cantonese and all regional varieties - including syntax, morphology, phonetics and phonology, semantics, language variation and sociolinguistic studies, diachronic change, language contact, typology and comparative studies, child language acquisition, second language acquisition and processing, bi/multilingualism, code-switching, applications of theory to pedagogy.
Abstracts should be no more than 400 words long, and be submitted in both English and Chinese (i.e. 400 words for each language version).
The best abstracts across the range of theoretical and applied areas will be selected for talks running in 2 parallel sessions, as a mix of in-person and online: 20 minutes for talks, and 10 minutes for questions/discussion. The working languages of the conference are Chinese and English, so please specify which language you would present in, if your abstract is accepted. There may also be informal discussion workshops after the main conference programme finishes for the day for those able to attend in person.
