Monday June 13 marked the beginning of the RailNewcastle Talks 2016. Participants came from all around Europe as well as Thailand and engaged in discussion about the presentations, giving their opinions and potential solutions to the issues raised during the talks.
The day started off with a welcome from Dr Marin Marinov of Newcastle University and was followed with presentations by Newcastle student’s Martin Mak and Jonathan Powell as well as three guests from Mahidol University in Thailand.
The second day kicked off with a presentation from Dr Borna Abramovic, a Railway Talents Ambassador who will be featured in the next Railway Talents newsletter interview (www.railtalent.org) on his thoughts about RailNewcastle week as well as his views on the rail industry. He gave two presentations throughout the day on infrastructure charges fees system and the economic efficiency and management of the rail transport market respectively. Dr Abramovic’s morning presentation was followed by Dr Martin Lehnert’s on traffic management who also gave another presentation on Wednesday about energy efficient driving and the importance of data structures in rail. The other speaker on Tuesday was Dr Bernhard Rueger of Austria who gave presentations on the interior space of railway carriages and baggage logistics.
The week continued on with presentations from Dr Florin Nematanu, Dr Paul Hyde, Dr Remy Shaltout and Dr Christian Ulianov on Wednesday. These talks ranged from the use of satellite and communication systems to integrated systems for real time tracking of railway assets and vehicles.
As the week began to wind down, eight Newcastle University students joined in to give their MSc presentations on Thursday afternoon. In the morning, Mr. Giuseppe Pace, Prof Stefeno Ricci, and Prof John Roberts gave their presentations which were supplemented by discussion afterwards. The RailNewcastle guests also got a chance to ask the students giving presentations follow up questions about their research after their talks.
Finally, the week ended with four presentations from RailNewcastle guests and a talk by a PhD student. When asked what they enjoyed most about the week, many of the participants agreed that the ability to network with railway experts across Europe was highly beneficial.
